چکیده

The recent experimental realization of a the quantum spin hall e ect has caused a lot of interest in these topological states of matter. Topological insulators are a new form of condensed matter that are not characterized by a spontaneously broken symmetry. Instead the materials are characterized by topology of the manifold of the occupied bloch states. Topological insulators have the unique property that the surface states are spin polarized based upon the direction the current is owing. Like the quantum hall e ect, the resistance of the surface states is quantized with the quantum unit of resistivity. ∗Electronic address: \[email protected];

Quantum spin Hall insulators in centrosymmetric thin films composed from topologically trivial BiTeI trilayers

The quantum spin Hall insulators predicted ten years ago and now experimentally observed are instrumental for a break- through in nanoelectronics due to non-dissipative spin-polarized electron transport through their edges. For this transport to persist at normal conditions, the insulators should possess a sufficiently large band gap in a stable topological phase. Here, we theoretically show th...

Colloquium: Topological Insulators

Topological insulators are electronic materials that have a bulk band gap like an ordinary insulator but have protected conducted states on their edge or surface. These states are possible due to the combination of spinorbit interactions and time-reversal symmetry. The two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator is a quantum spin Hall insulator, which is a close cousin of the integer quantum Hal...

A new class of large band gap quantum spin hall insulators: 2D fluorinated group-IV binary compounds

We predict a new class of large band gap quantum spin Hall insulators, the fluorinated PbX (X = C, Si, Ge and Sn) compounds, that are mechanically stable two-dimensional materials. Based on first principles calculations we find that, while the PbX systems are not topological insulators, all fluorinated PbX (PbXF2) compounds are 2D topological insulators. The quantum spin Hall insulating phase w...

Anomalous Hall response in two-dimensional topological insulators due to the Stark effect

It is shown that the presence of matrix dipole moments induced by external electric fields can modify the Hall response in two-dimensional topological insulators. In the case of the quantum anomalous Hall effect the induced transverse currents acquire an extra term, being proportional to the Hall conductance and the time derivative of the applied electric field. In the case of the quantum spin ...

Quantized topological surface states promise a quantum Hall state in topological insulators

The prediction [1] and experimental discovery [2, 3] of a class of materials known as topological insulators is a major recent event in the condensed matter physics community. Why do twoand three-dimensional topological insulators (such as HgTe/CdTe [2] and Bi2Se3 [3], respectively) attract so much interest? Thinking practically, these materials open a rich vista of possible applications and de...
